Rombo Marathon

Welcome to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) page for the Rombo Marathon! We're thrilled you're considering joining us for this unforgettable scenic trail race and cultural celebration in the heart of Rombo District, Kilimanjaro Region, Tanzania. Nestled on the forested slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, our event combines exhilarating runs with community festivities, all while supporting environmental conservation, education, and health initiatives.

The Rombo Marathon & Ndafu Festival is an annual trail running event and cultural festival held in Rombo, Kilimanjaro. Launched in February 2023, it features scenic forest trails along the Kenya-Tanzania border, including the Rongai Forest Reserve. The “Ndafu” element celebrates local traditions with grilled goat feasts, music, and community gatherings. Our mission is to promote tourism, protect the environment, and fund local education and health projects.

 The 2025 edition is scheduled for December 23, 2025 (Christmas week!), starting and finishing at Rongai Forest Sports Grounds in Rombo District. Races kick off early morning, with festivities continuing into the evening. Expect mild, drizzly weather typical of the season—perfect for trail running under the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro!

We offer something for every level:

  • Full Marathon (42 km): Challenging trails for seasoned ultra-runners.
  • Half Marathon (21 km): Our flagship race through lush forests.
  • 10 km Trail Run: Ideal for intermediate runners seeking adventure.
  • 5 km Fun Run: Family-friendly jog/walk to kick off the day. All routes highlight biodiversity and borderland beauty, with elevation gains up to 500m.

 Registration opens on our website starting November 1, 2025. Fees start at TZS 50,000 (about $20 USD) for the Fun Run, up to TZS 150,000 for the Marathon. Early bird discounts apply until November 1. Groups of 5+ get 10% off! All participants receive a finisher’s medal, event T-shirt, and access to the Ndafu Festival.

Yes — overall winners, age-group awards, and local champion categories. All finishers of the Full/Half/10K receive medals.

 Official chip timing for Half and Full Marathons. Cut-offs: 5 km (1.5 hrs), 10 km (2 hrs), Half (4 hrs), Full (7 hrs). Results posted live on our app and website.

 Fully stocked every 5 km with hydration, snacks, and first-aid. Medical teams (including ambulance) at start/finish and key points. Partnered with local clinics for emergencies. Hydrate early—December temps average 15-25°C.

 The starting and finishing point is typically the Rongai Forest Sports Grounds in Tarakea, Rombo, Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. The races often involve running through the Rongai forest reserve.
